What we thought of Race Training with Jim Saltonstall

As you can see from Sir Ben Ainslie’s comments above, Jim Saltonstall is widely regarded as one of the most influential (if not the most influential) drivers of British sailing’s recent success in Olympic sailing. He’s worked with the likes of Ainslie, Iain Percy, Andrew Simpson, Chris Draper and Nick Rogers, along with many, many other Olympians and World Champions.

But is there another side to all this?

How is it, I ask you, that this so called “legend” wasn’t able to spot my undeniable talent and nurture me to multiple Olympic medals? I was part of the Optimist National Squad when Saltonstall was National Coach, and yet my mid-fleet brilliance never caught his eye as potential medal material.

This oversight notwithstanding, he was a brilliant coach, and this book is packed full of useful tips for sailors of all abilities. It covers a huge range of topics, and possibly my only criticism is that some of them might benefit from a bit more depth. I know from personal experience that he could probably have written a book on each of the chapters, and it must have been difficult deciding what to leave out to make the book a manageable size.

Saltonstall is a man with a knack for finding a useful phrase, and if this book were to have a motto it would probably be “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail” – a quote that he uses here. The book contains tons of useful information about how to form and implement a plan to improve your sailing, whatever level it is that you aim to achieve.

So if you are looking to coach yourself and develop your sailing performance, you could do far worse than taking the advice of a man that has supervised the training programmes of five Olympic gold, four silver and two bronze medallists.

Even if I wasn’t one of them.
