Born To Win by John Bertrand

Born To Win is the best sailing biography I’ve read. If you can find a reasonably priced copy (or own a kindle), then I can’t recommend this book enough.

What The Author Says About Born To Win

This is the classic story of the underdog winning, describing in detail the thrills and battles of Australia II’s historic 1983 America’s Cup win.

But if you think this book is just about sailing, think again. It’s a book about life, love and the triumph of the human spirit.

First published in 1985, the updated Kindle edition includes John Bertrand’s life after the America’s Cup. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but it’s an inspiring tale of courage, fortitude and commitment from a born leader and entrepreneur.

What The Reviewers Say

Sir Edmund Hillary
‘Born To Win is a gripping story of courage and determination, of a skipper and crew who refuse to admit defeat, and who against all odds, ultimately triumphed on their own Everest’

What we thought of Born to Win

I first read this book way back in 1990, and I loved it. It is one of the few books I’ve read more than once (I prefer to read something new rather than go over something I’ve already read), and I’ve loved it every time.

The descriptions of the races against Liberty are probably the best pieces of writing on what sailing in hugely important races is like – they make fantastic reading.

But it is the build-up, starting from Bertrand’s childhood, that provides the most lasting impression. He provides insights into team-building, leadership, will-to-win mentality and even coping with luck, and all with great wit.

If you can find a reasonably priced copy (or own a kindle), then I can’t recommend this book enough.
