That’s very true. The lure of promotion is a good motivator, and the threat of relegation can also sharpen the competitive instincts.

I always think the best ideas are the ones that reward either improvement (i.e. moving up fleets, or winning on individual handicaps), or attendance (which most club racing does – if you turn up regularly you tend to do ok).

As are prizes for Masters, Heavyweights, Lightweights, Juniors or any other non-patronising way of categorising sailors.
